Need to Protect Your Car this Summer? Here’s What to Do

Now that it is May, we’re just around the corner from summer vacation. This is a time of year when a lot of people hit the road and head out of town. You likely will use your car a lot more this summer than you might have in the winter, or even the spring.

So, how do you keep your trusted set of wheels safe while on the road? There’s a lot of different hazards that might strike—wrecks, breakdowns, theft and even environmental damage. With a little attention to detail, you can keep yourself and your car in tip-top shape.

Car Maintenance Helps You Set Off With Ease

Before you travel this summer, make sure your car can make the trip. A well-functioning car likely won’t experience as much wear and tear during travel. Compared to a neglected vehicle, it might very well keep you much safer.

  • Have your car’s oil changed, and check the car’s fluid levels. Pay special attention to the engine and battery systems. Exposure to heavy use and high temperatures over the summer might damage them.
  • Inspect your tires, and make changes and repairs as necessary. Check the tire pressure to ensure optimal rpm and fuel usage. Also make sure the tires have adequate treads. Tire treads help the wheels grip the road.
  • Make sure your heating and cooling systems work to keep you comfortable
  • Check your steering, brake and pedal systems to make sure no defects exist.

Remember Safety as You Drive

Once you set off on vacation, you have to see to your own security, as well as that of those around you. How can you do that in the most efficient ways?

  • Always follow the rules of the road. Do not speed, drink and drive or break the law. Your focus should be on the road ahead.
  • During inclement weather slow down, use your headlights and pay attention to cars around you.
  • If the car shows signs of a problem, safely pull off the road and seek a mechanic’s services.
  • Lock and turn off the car at every stop. You never know when thieves might decide to act.

As always, make sure you have an adequate, functioning car insurance policy. A licensed insurance agent can help you determine the policy that best fits your needs. Keep a copy of your insurance policy in your car at all times during travel. If you ever need help, it can come in handy.
